A Fable 5.1 vs Fable 5 comparison only works if you separate marketing nicknames from API SKUs. Fable 5 is the shipping product. Fable 5.1 is not listed next to it in Anthropic’s model table.
What you can verify today
- Fable 5 API ID: claude-fable-5. Fable 5.1 API ID: not published.
- Fable 5 context 1M tokens, max output 128K, adaptive thinking always on.
- Fable 5 list price at launch: $10 / $50 per million input/output tokens.
- Fable 5 runs dynamic safety classifiers; high-risk cyber/bio prompts can fall back to Opus 4.8.
- Mythos 5 is not “Fable 5.1”; it is the partner-only sibling with some safeguards lifted.
Fable 5.1 is not a silent rename of Fable 5
Do not swap prompts to a guessed claude-fable-5-1 string. Invalid model IDs fail at the API. Keep claude-fable-5 until Anthropic documents a new ID, tokenizer notes, and a retirement schedule the way they did for Fable 5 (not sooner than June 9, 2027 for that SKU).
When a real 5.1 would matter
A genuine point release would typically change evals, classifiers, tokenizer, or pricing. Until those show up in platform release notes, “upgrade to Fable 5.1” checklists are speculative. For agentic coding and long-horizon work, the documented model is still Fable 5.
